East Toronto Orthopaedic & Sports Injury Clinic and Trilogy Physiotherapy have partnered in order to provide you with the experienced and skilled care you deserve.
GLA:D Canada has been shown to be effective in the reduction of pain, medication usage, and improved function in hip and knee patients. The program runs twice weekly for eight weeks with ongoing enrollment, and includes education sessions to help you to manage your condition and avoid flare-ups.
The GLA:D education and exercise program for knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) has had a great level of success since it was established in Denmark and is now available in parts of Canada. The program is active in regions within Ontario, and expansion across Canada will be happening in the near future. Our Danforth location is proud to offer this three-part program, consisting of education, delivery, and monitoring outcomes.
The education aspect includes training in the most up-to-date knowledge and research on the pathology and management of OA, such as assessment of the educational and exercise needs of individuals who have the signs and/or symptoms of knee or hip OA. It is important that patients understand how and why their treatment is being implemented. Patients will learn what osteoarthritis is, risk factors and symptoms, available treatments for osteoarthritis, self-management of symptoms, and coping mechanism to address the difficulties of daily activities associated with osteoarthritis.
The delivery component is crucial. Throughout the twelve neuromuscular exercise sessions, patients will discover how to control movements, proper posture techniques, how to build muscular strength through functional exercises, and how to apply these exercises to their daily activities.
Monitoring outcomes is a part of the program that not only helps the individuals participating, it also contributes to the growing the body of research and analysis that will continue to benefit the OA community worldwide. The program measures the health status of patients upon the first visit, and then at the 3-month and 12-month milestones of participation in the program. This information is vital in collecting data on how the program is working for people with osteoarthritis all over Canada and ultimately will improve the program as a whole.
This program is available in-person or virtually at our East Toronto location, and available virtually at our Trilogy locations.
